Read the Sad story of How 5 students drowned in River Kaduna

After hearing the news on Radio, I decided to do some digging and thanks to Daily post, I have the full news. Kindly read below

The victims, all SSS 2 students, according to a source, were four male and one female, namely Priscilla Romania (female), Goodness Aromilade, Monday Umahi, Joseph Benedict and David Ukegbu, aged between 14 and 16.

The Kaduna Police Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mukhtar, confirmed the incident to newsmen and announced yesterday that two of the bodies had been found.

He said, “We were informed and we swung into action immediately and we were able to rescue some of those who drowned, including two teachers on Wednesday. As we speak, we have recovered one body and we are about to recover another one we just discovered floating at Kudenda axis of the river, making it two bodies.”

Earlier, in his capacity as DPO in charge of Kakuri Police station, CSP Benshak Dakyer, said the iron boat which was used in moving the students to the position where water is pumped from, broke and the boat capsized.

He said initially those that drowned were 10, but five were rescued and had been treated and discharged from hospital.

One of the rescued victims said he escaped by clinging one of the iron supports immediately after the accident. “I then managed to come out by swimming. My friends were also trying to come out but the pressure of the water was much, so they could not,” he said.

Earlier, unofficial report said the students and their teachers had visited the water board at Malali, from where they were planning to cross the river on a light boat.

“They visited water board during the excursion and thereafter, they were trying to cross to the other side of the river using available canoe. But due to the weight, the canoe capsized and all of them were affected. But people around who could swim saved some of them while others are still missing,” a source had said.
