Law officers begin strike over poor working conditions in Plateau

—Plateau State chapter of the Association of Law Officers of Nigeria has begun an indefinite strike to protest poor working condition.
The strike, set to commence today as explained by Joel Tahvan, an Assistant Director, Public Prosecution and Chairman, Law Officers Association, Plateau State chapter, will see law officers not going to courts but reporting to work at the State Ministry of Justice until their demands were met by the state government.
The resolution to embark on the strike was contained in a document issued at the end of the Association’s meeting, where a 12-point demand was raised and presented to the office of the Commissioner of Justice for attention.

This work-to-rule action is coming after the expiration of the seven days ultimatrum given the state government to address the workers’ demands.
In the document signed by the 54 members of the Association, including Assistant Directors, Public Prosecution, Civil Litigation, Citizens Rights and Legal Drafting as well as Senior State Counsels, Assistant Chief State Counsels among others, the paramount demand is the overhaul of the system for the comfort of their members as responsible law officers.
It read: “The poor working conditions complained of have not improved instead things have deteriorated to such an unbearable level that they have affected the output of counsel in the Ministry.
‘’The deteriorated state of things is incompatible and degrading to the legal profession and the status of a legal practitioner called to the Nigerian Bar.”
