Kaduna bread bakers warn against use of potassium bromate

The Kaduna State Director of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dadi Natim Mullah, has warned bakers in the state against using potassium bromate in baking bread.
He said  that any baker found wanting would be arrested.

Speaking at a one-day seminar organised by the Association of Arewa Master Bakers Forum in collaboration with Bons Company China, the NAFDAC boss raised an alarm on the use of potassium bromate by some bakers in the state, saying that the agency’s officials would begin testing bread with a view to seizing bread baked with the banned substance and sanctioning owners of such bakery.
He said that potassium bromate causes cancer in human beings, adding that the agency would not allow its citizens to be hurt.
"Potassium bromate is still banned in Nigeria but we are worried because some bakers still use it as additive in flour to make bread,” he said.
He called on the leadership of bakers in the state to educate their members on the danger of using potassium bromate to bake bread to avoid being arrested.
