– Neymar moved to Barcelona from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 for a fee of €57.1 million and his release clause set at €190 million
– The 24-year-old is fingered for his part in a corruption case over his transfer
– The player and his father are set to stand trial alongside the former club boss
There are calls by Spanish authorities for Barcelona forward Neymar to be sent to prison for two years, BBC reports.
The 24-year-old is fingered for his part in a corruption case over his transfer from Brazilian club Santos in 2013.
Jose Perals who is the presiding judge of the case also insisted that former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell be sentenced to a five years imprisonment and a fine of 8.4million euros (£7.2m).
Neymar and his father are set to stand trial alongside the former club boss.
Recall that, Rosell resigned as Barcelona president in 2014 for his role in the affair and testified in court in February alongside Bartomeu, Neymar and Neymar’s father.
This is not the first time a Barcelona player will be involved in such scandal, Lionel Messi and his father Jorge were sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud earlier in 2016.
The duo were found to have evaded tax on Lionel’s image rights, owing more than €4m in back payments. The Court of Catalonia has now taken action and now sentenced the pair to just under two years in prison.
However, as the sentence is short of two years, and neither Lionel nor Jorge have a criminal record, were not required to physically serve any jail time.
