Barack Obama choose Nigerian artist, Kehinde Wiley to paint his official portrait

New-York based Nigerian artist, Kehinde Wiley, has been chosen by
Former US president Barack Obama to paint his official portrait for Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The tradition started with George H. Bush, in which an artist is commissioned to create a portrait of the president and the first lady after their tenure.
Though past American leaders had always commissioned 90-year old portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler, who has so far painted eight US presidents, but Obama chose to go with Kehinde. This was disclosed in Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s announcement yesterday.
On the other hand, Former first lady Michelle Obama also chose Baltimore-based painter Amy Sherald to paint her portrait, making Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald the first black artists to create official presidential portraits for the Smithsonian.
Born to a Nigerian dad and an African-American mom, Kehinde did not grow up with his father, so at the age of 20, he traveled to Nigeria to explore his roots and meet him. His mother supported his interest in art and enrolled him in after-school art classes when he was a child. He earned his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999 and his MFA from Yale University, School of Art in 2001.
Throughout his career, Kehinde has become renowned for creating portraits of African American men, including the Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Michael Jackson, and more. He is also known for lush, larger-than-life portraits that overlay black street culture with European classical motifs.

Stop intimidating us over our land, Kaduna communities tell El-Rufai

Nine communities in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has urged well-meaning Nigerians including President Muhammadu Buhari, to prevail on the governor of the state, Nasiru El-Rufa’i to pay compensations for land taken from them.
Abdullahi Sulaiman, spokesman of the affected communities, said at a press briefing on Monday in Kaduna that the state government has taken over their lands and refused to pay them compensation, alleging that the government is using the police to intimidate them.

He listed the communities affected to include: Danhonu II, Sabongarin Danhonu, Anguwar Maje, Kakura, Kyauta, Sabon Gero, Kurmin Sata, Kadaure and Sabon Danbushiya.
He said that although the government reserves the right to acquire land for any development purpose, it must however discharge its obligation by adequately compensating the rightful owners.
He added: "The communities had written seven letters to government between March 2016 and July 2017 on the issue of compensation without any response.
"The government had ordered the arrest and detention of some members of the communities and even though we have written a petition to the Chief Judge of the state on the matter, our members were not given fair-hearing in court.
“We call on all well-meaning Nigerians, citizens of Kaduna state and lovers of peace and justice anywhere they are, and even the international community to hear our cries and prevail on the Kaduna state government to do what is right and just.
"We also call on President Muhammadu Buhari, State and National Assembly members, civil society and human right groups to come to our rescue immediately.”
Sulaiman stressed that members of the communities would remain law-abiding in the pursuit of their quest for justice using all legitimate means.

Kaduna Govt releases N38m for anti-measles campaign

The Kaduna State Government has released N38 million to combat measles as it embarks on a state-wide immunisation campaign.

At a joint press conference with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the state Deputy Director, Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA), Hamza Ibrahim Ikara, lamented the havoc the disease had caused in the state.

He particularly identified deformity and mortality as the major havoc of the disease.

Ikara who represented the Executive Secretary of PHCDA, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, said that Kaduna State “lost a lot of children to measles” in the last few years and “despite the efforts by state government, we are still recording reported cases of measles m in some local government areas.”

He said that the state government through PHCDA has concluded arrangements for the 2017 round of measles’ immunisation campaign starting from October 26.”

Designed to cover the 23 local government areas in the state, Ikara said that the first phase of the campaign e which will cover the North and Kaduna Central is billed for October 26 to October 31 while the second phase which is Southern Kaduna is slated for November 2 till November 7.

Ikara described measles as a dangerous disease, stressing it reduces children’s ability to fight other ailments leading to their death and urged parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated.

Photos: Female student of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Katsina, dies hours after being bitten by snake

Zainab Umar, an Economics student of the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Katsina died from snake poisoning in the early hours of Sunday.
Zainab was bitten by a dangerous snake on her way to the school Library on Sunday, October 15.
She has been buried according to the Islamic teachings at her family residence.
According to reports, Zainab was rushed to the school clinic only to be administered paracetamol injection to suppress the pain. Read the report by Kabir Sheme and others below:
"We just lost a sister and a friend Zainab Umar from the department of economics, Umaru Musa Yaradu'a University Katsina, Katsina State. She suffered from snake poisoning after being bitten by a snake a day before yesterday. This gives us as students of the same institution a cause to worry because our welfare is not a priority to the school authorities. Zainab was bitten and rushed to the school clinic only to be administered paracetamol injection to suppress the pain,is that the medical action required to be given to a victim of snake bite??? After 3hrs,she was placed on drip of which the poison had already found its way to some parts of her body I'm sure. Her friends requested they took her home but the Dean of student affairs had refused stating that if they moved her an inch from the clinic, whatever happens to her is not a business of his (yet he claims he's incharge of all student's affairs). She was not being administered proper medication, the clinic claimed there was no anti snake bite drugs available in the whole of Katsina, how unrealistic!!!
They're aware of the absence of this drugs yet the school authorities won't do nothing about the lack of street lights knowing veey well that students go out to read at night, they do nothing about the continuously growing grasses and trees that is gradually turning this school into a forest rearing all sort of animals both wild and domestic. Is this a school environment or a recreational facility???
The school authorities must do something about this before their selfishness claims more lives of the students. I urge all Umyuk student to share and repost this......something has to be done. We need to feel safe and secured within the school environment. We have paid not for just knowledge but security as well!!!!
May your gentle soul live in peace, you will forever live in our hearts Zee

Nigerian film maker and Professor, Onyeka Nwelue recounts getting sexually abused by women

Nigerian film maker and Professor at Ohio University, Onyeka Nwelue, took to Facebook to narrate stories of getting almost raped by women, and those who asked him for sex in return for a favour.
He further revealed that women get away with sexual molestation, because people see women as weaker vessels. He wrote;
“In July, a female fan came to my hotel room in New York and undressed herself. I kept telling her I was not interested in sex. Or her body. She didn’t mind. She wanted sex with me. I had just flown in from Cuba. I had Cuban rum, which I drank when I was losing my mind. She did not want to go home.
Turn around the table: a male fan in the hotel room of a woman, undressed. That is RAPE!
Women get away with anything because we deceptively say they are weaker sex. Bunkum!
On my film set recently, a powerful woman came to ask me for sex before she could give me the loan I asked from her. I told everyone who was close to me on set. Thank God, my two producers are women. I told them.
As a child, I was molested by a woman. Someone we called Aunty. I made a short film, The Great Masturbator highlighting this issue.
In Calgary, I spoke about being molested by a woman infront of Nigerian women and they all started laughing at me. I cursed them. I was angry.
Women are about themselves. The Boy Child has no supporter. The women think only about themselves. No woman wants to know what I am going through psychologically but they want us to help them update my Facebook with: “Me, too!”
No way, I won’t. Unless they take our cases seriously too, I am not pandering to that!”

Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to invest $30m in Niger and Kaduna states to boost Agricultural sector

Niger and kaduna states to get $30 million to boost Agricultural sector
The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) says it will invest $30 million to boost agriculture in Nigeria within the next four years.
Dr Kehinde Makinde, the Country Team Leader, AGRA, Nigeria, made this known at a workshop on Economic Impact Assessment of the Micro Reforms for African Agribusiness (MIRA) project, on Wednesday in Abuja.
He explained that the money would be used to support small holder farmers across the country.
He said that the project, which would focus on promoting rice, maize and cassava, would last from 2017 to 2021.

Makinde, who noted that Kaduna and Niger would be used as pilot states for the project, added that it would be extended to other states of the country later.
The team leader said the project is geared toward agricultural transformation and strengthening the value chain to become more efficient and deliver more impact for the small holder farmers.
According to him, the project is also to make sure that Africa can feed itself.
He noted that the project, especially on cassava, would be achieved through Public Private Partnership (PPP).
“For AGRA, we are working to reach over 30 million small holder farmers across Africa to reduce poverty.
“We are looking toward working across 11 countries in Africa to bring agricultural transformation to support what the governments of the different countries are doing on making sure that Africa is able to feed itself.
“Agriculture can be a business. We have clear strategy on how to bring about agricultural transformation in Africa.
“AGRA is working with the government of different countries that will lead to agricultural transformation and strengthen agricultural value chain so that they become more efficient and deliver more impact for the small holder farmers.
“In Nigeria, we are focusing on three crops, we are looking at rice, maize and cassava.
“We have selected two states to roll out this intervention. We are working to cumulate investments by other partners,’’ he said.
AGRA was founded in 2006 to reduce poverty and hunger in Africa.
It works across the continent to help millions of smallholder farmers who make up 70 percent of Africa’s population to boost their farm productivity and incomes.
AGRA has supported more than 400 projects, including efforts to develop and deliver better seeds, increase farm yields, improve soil fertility, upgrade storage facilities, improve market information systems, strengthen farmers’ associations.
It aims to play a central role in transforming the agricultural sector in Africa and its food system in a way that is tailored to place a strong emphasis on safeguarding the environment.

Death toll rises to 276 in Somalia's worst bomb attack with about 300 injured in the capital

The most powerful bomb blast ever witnessed in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital killed 276 people with around 300 others injured, the country's information minister, Information Minister Abdirahman O. Osman said early Monday morning, making it the deadliest single attack in this Horn of Africa nation. The toll was expected to rise.
The attack occurred when a truck carrying explosives detonated Saturday in a crowded street packed with cars and pedestrians, near government ministries and hotels.
In a tweet, Abdirahman Osman called the attack "barbaric" and said countries including Turkey and Kenya had already offered to send medical aid. Hospitals were overwhelmed a day after a truck bomb targeted a crowded street near key government ministries, including foreign affairs.
As angry protesters gathered near the scene of the attack, Somalia's government blamed the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group for what it called a "national disaster." However, Africa's deadliest Islamic extremist group, which often targets high-profile areas of the capital, had yet to comment.
Al-Shabab earlier this year vowed to step up attacks after both the Trump administration and Somalia's recently elected president announced new military efforts against the group.
Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo said the attack showed Somalia’s enemies cared nothing for human lives.
"Today's horrific attack proves our enemy would stop at nothing to cause our people pain and suffering. Let’s unite against terror,” he tweeted. The president declared three days of mourning and called on citizens to donate blood as hospitals struggled to save critically injured civilians.
After the president visited Medina Hospital on Sunday morning to give blood and comfort victims, hundreds more Somalis flocked to hospitals to donate blood.
Relatives of missing people arrived at hospitals Sunday desperate for news of loved ones. Others wandered around the ruins of buildings hit by the blast.
Many of the dead had not been identified, with dozens burned beyond recognition.
The Mogadishu bombing is one of the deadliest attacks in sub-Saharan Africa, larger than the Garissa University attack in Kenya in 2015 and the U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
