17 houses, several tankers burnt in accident along Kaduna, Abuja highway

An accident involving a fuel tanker and a Volkswagen Golf along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway has led to the burning of 17 houses and scores of fuel tankers parked along the highway in Tafa village.

NEMA, Yushau Shuaib, said a mosque was also destroyed in the incident but that no life was lost.
He said rescue workers were quickly mobilised to the scene to evacuate residents from the raging inferno.
Mr.Shuaibu said “The accident was caused by the tanker driver’s attempt to escape a head on collision with the Golf car. He also tried to avoid the numerous other tankers packed by the roadside.
“He therefore lost control and skidded off the road and fell down spilling petrol which led to a fire outbreak”.
Tafa Village, which serves as a kind of rendezvous for tanker drivers, is notorious for tanker accidents because drivers making stopovers usually park their tankers along the highway.
